There were many apps that could do almost every task, but often fell short in one or more tests — most notably in the merging and form-filling tests.

In talking with many iPad PDF users, a common theme ran throughout: The most important features of a PDF management app are organization , annotation , and reading. PDF Expert 6 offers the best of class in all three of those categories, and adds yet another: editing. Many of the other apps we tested hide common user tasks with gestures and tap zones the user must somehow learn and remember. For example, in PDFpen you rename a document by double-tapping the file name, yet — even as a long-time user of the app — I often forget that shortcut every time I want to rename a document.

PDF Expert tries to avoid taps and buttons where it can by clearly labeling things where needed and tailoring the gestures intuitively based on the view the user has chosen in the app. Like everything else in PDF Expert, moving files around is extremely quick and easy.

Side note: Dragging a PDF file on top of another creates a folder, which is shown via the files changing into a folder icon nice touch , but we would love to be able to toggle this action into a merging action. Dragging one PDF file onto another to merge the two together would be a better use for this action; after all, folders can always be created by tapping the new folder icon.

When you do find yourself tapping the Select button, be prepared to smile if working with PDFs is a large part of your life, as it is for me. As expected, tapping this button allows you to select multiple files to act on. However, it also opens up a new set of options in the sidebar, including:. Not all of these features are unique to PDF Expert, but it was the only app we tested with all of the features together in one app.

The most elusive to other apps are the tagging, zipping, and merging features. Even at that, many other apps simply did not perform these actions as easily as PDF Expert does. Not to mention, some of these tasks are even easier in PDF Expert on the iPad than they are in some desktop applications for the Mac.

Though specialized apps do exist for this specific task, we are trying to find a good all-in-one PDF solution. In both cases, PDF Expert handled the task quickly and without hiccups. While viewing a document, tap either one from the top-hand toolbar to select that mode. When it comes to annotations, PDF Expert has always had the most feature-rich highlighting engine in our testing. Offering very opaque coloring and dark colors makes it one of the few apps tested that allow you to easily redact lines of text using a black highlight, but do note that you need to flatten the PDF if you want it to remain redacted when shared.

This is something the NSA should probably look into. When you want simple changes you can use GoodReader since it has simple editing options and annotations. With iAnnotate you will have a chance to explore its editing options such as annotate, comment, highlight, underline, edit texts and stamp PDF.

It is also a good PDF reader that allows you to open multiple files and supports vertical scrolling of pages. Moreover, it also has thumbnails, which you can easily navigate through them. This application allows you to customize toolbars, multitask, use Apple pencil, share files and use the smart keyboard on iPads.

Doing so unlocks the following features:. PDF Expert allows you to switch between vertical and horizontal scrolling modes, both of which perform admirably. Prior to the 6. Thankfully, that issue has since been resolved and vertical scrolling now performs exactly the way you want it to.

Another welcome update is the ability to zoom out past the width of the page in landscape mode. It used to be that in landscape, the document would simply fill the width of your device, with no option to zoom out and view the entire page.

Overall, the reading experience is solid, offering one of the fastest renderings of large PDF files we tested. In other words, no matter what your office uses, you can probably sync your documents in the app.

PDF Expert works very well with Dropbox shared folders. If you have several different people you collaborate with on certain PDFs, you can all share a folder in Dropbox and that folder can be added to your Documents tab in PDF Expert.

The app also allows you to enable iOS Data Protection file-encryption system. These are great options that help keep access to your cloud storage secure but easily accessible to you. The iCloud syncing between your Mac and iPad alone makes it a valuable tool, though one could just as easily use services like Dropbox to achieve a similar solution with PDF Expert.

Additionally, there is no universal search for PDFs, nor is there a tab bar for quickly switching between several different currently-open PDFs in the app. It offers strong export options and import sources, and our favorite feature is the media library. There is a standard set of items like those found in other apps: comments, text, arrows, boxes, lines, and camera roll.

PDF Expert will allow you to do this though 2 — iAnnotate is more customisable in terms of typing and highlighting notes. Hi Karen, Thanks for replying. What do you mean by editable highlighting in iAnnotate though?

Do you mean you cannot change what you have highlighted or do you mean there are more colours etc? You can in iAnnotate though. Loving it so far! When I open an already highlighted file on either iAnnotate or PDF expert, is there any way to remove highlighted sentences again? However, PDF Expert has undo buttons, which work with highlighting a sentence, and undoing? In my opinion they are pretty equal in this. I wonder about the already on the macbook-made-highlights…. Does iAnnotate import ppt only with the 4 slides on each page format, or can it do one slide per page?

IAnnotate converts ppt into 1 slide per pare PDFs. Then you can choose to print 4 or 6 on a page if you like after. Thanks for this great review! I am a teacher looking for a great app on which to grade papers. As is, they are enormous! Thanks again for this great info. I want to see how extraction looks. I have notability and it works great for annotations but it is missing the function of extracting annotations. Does Annotation summary preserves the highlight colours and text?

Which in my opinion is not good when you need to quickly glance at the article to refresh your memory. How does Iannotate handle this? Thank you for great review. Nice job, Your review is really a great source of informations in the PDF tool era.

By chance, did you have a look at neu. With the low price, I think I gonna go for a try, but you expert advice will be welcome anyway. Following a lecture and changing pen anything color, font size etc is exceptionally time consuming and leaves you well behind the lecture flow — I too like to use multiple colors, a mix of typing with horrible courier new font and free drawing, with arrows here and there.

Changing pen color midway through handwriting changes ALL text in that annotation ie, if you start writing in blue, then change to green, ALL the blue text changes green too, not just new text. You must save the annotation and re-open the writing tool, or use the writing menu to change to eraser, then back to pen and the previous text is background saved and the new color applies from then on….

NO ability to insert a blank page is annoying. Annotating a PDF lab book, full of text and diagrams, a blank page for notes and or graphs would be great. Nor can I insert a PDF page created in notability etc. Standard highlighter only works by selecting text and color filling it.

To free form highlight, you need to use the pen, set the size ie. No easy highlight option. On home pc, simply define which folders will sync, without having to save in special Dropbox folder. Multiple PDFs open at once is a cinch — great to have textbook open on one, and lecture notes on other all in same app.

I can do without the fancy GUI, but these lacking features frustrate me to no end. An early look at neu. Are you aware of any worth trying perhaps new entrants that may fit my needs? Thanks you very much. I was just wondering if others of you have had a problem with PDF Expert suddenly quitting and losing all of your annotations from that session? Hi Karen! Wow, this is a great review! I am a vet student who needs some way to annote PDFs quickly and efficiently. With the PDF Expert 4.

I really love that iAnnotate 2. Do you know if the PDF Expert update has changed that at all? I wonder if you can see what I do wrong below. Is this insuffienct or wrong? Do I also need to save the file in some way? I simply want the edited file to replace the one on my computer, or possibly be saved as a new copy. Eric, Is your fold synced with Dropbox? The easiest way to check is when in the main menu screen eg figure 4 , there should be a little green tick on the folder icon that is currently automatically synced to your dropbox.

This was the problem! Apparently only some of the folders had the little green tick on the folder which I completely missed to notice.

Thanks for your help! Excellent reviews. I have been an avid iAnnotate user for a while, however was recently introduced to PDF expert. Thanks for all the fantastic information. Loved this article and all the comments. I own several PDF apps, and use them for different purposes. Well, I found out the hard way there is no Undo in iAnnotate. Wrote a whole paragraph of commentary for a piece I was reviewing in my writing group then put a drawing of my initial in the lower-left corner.

When the screen zoomed out after the drawing the drawing was covering part of my text. When I clicked the drawing in an area where there was no text and hit delete, my text was deleted but my drawing remained. There was no way to recover the text. Simply put, the interface is much easier to use! The organization seems to be less cluttered and less bulky than Goodreader. Here is a link that does an incredible job of breaking down three of the top PDF readers on the market.

I used PDF Expert almost exclusively but started having syncing issues, mainly with large files textbooks after I highlighted, wrote notes, labeled diagrams, etc. So, I switched over to iAnnotate…. After using iAnnotate for a while, I decided that I liked PDF Expert better, namely because it has more tools available and because it is just easier to use.

I could delete some files and not others. Not sure why. Moving files was not nearly as intuitive as PDF Expert drag and drop. I did like the fact that iAnnotate allowed me to open Word and PowerPoint files, however. Your style is unique compared to other folks I have read stuff from. Hey there! This is my first visit to your blog! We are a group of volunteers and starting a new initiative in a community in the same niche.

Your blog provided us valuable information to work on. You have done a outstanding job! Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up.

The words in your article seem to be running off the screen in Firefox. The style and design look great though! Hope you get the problem fixed soon.

The whole point of tabbed browsing is to be able to switch quickly between PDFs. Pick one and you are there. That moves your curent PDF down one in the Recent List and opens your selection which is moved to the top of the recent list.

I know it has been a long time coming, but here it is, a review on the most popular 3 PDF Editing programs for the iPad. I have been contemplating on how to compare the 3 apps for a few days now — how to set it out etc on wordpress, so this may be a bit messy if you are trying to read it; I will do my best to make it as legible and succinct as possible.

The 3 apps being compared are all in their latest versions PDF Expert just released version 4, iAnnotate released 2. Update: As requested, I have added examples of the export options of each app and what they look like on desktop. Currently using Adobe Acrobat Reader X. If you have read some of my earlier posts, you would know I use Dropbox as my main cloud app to store all my files — books, photos, lecture notes etc. Tools are easily accessible and effective. There are so many tools you can customise yourself and set the toolbar, the stamps, individual presets etc.

If you prefer to be able to convert files over to pdfs and have the patience to customise all your settings and toolbars yourself, go with iAnnotate. I hope this review helps — please leave questions if any and I will do my best to answer! Great breakdown! Im looking forward to what else you have to say about the 3 apps.

Which would you recommend or what do you use most often? Hi, Thanks! PDF Expert it wil be for me! Thank a lot for this extended review. I wish to see more reviews like this on the www! Take good care, Gregory. One note regarding PDF Expert and handwritten notes: I found that it is one additional, and simple, step to write the note anywhere on the page…then by tapping on it twice shrink it down and move it to exactly where I want it.

You can get your handwritten notes remarkably small and legible doing it this way. Yes, it is one additional step but should take but a moment. Maybe I am just used to the program? Thanks for the tip on handwritten notes! What I like most about is the simplicity and ease of the handwriting function.

And the best part? Hey Dave, I really like Notability too! And for only 99c, it was well worth the price! I just annotated a long doc with iAnnotate and found it to be my current favorite…once all the customization was done.

Again, thanks for the detailed breakdown. The bottom line, I guess, is that they all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Hey Dave, Yes, you are right — they all have their strengths and weaknesses. I think I am too lazy to customise all my tools in iAnnotate my excuse is I a far too busy to do it, and I am sticking to it! Thanks for the review.

I have passed the main things to our dev team. So you have got it right, we love clean and intuitive interface. But at the same time, the app should be powerful enough to beat the competitors.

Stay tuned for more news. There is something big coming from Readdle team — Scanner Pro for iPad. And it looks like you have some tough competition ahead with some unique features with PDFpen as well… But if Readdle listens to their customers which I know you guys are : then you will be way ahead of the game!

Btw, let me know when u guys have a special on for your Scanner pro and Remarks — they have piqued my interest! Could those apps export all annotations highlight, handwritting, etc? It would be nice if you could take screenshot of the annotation summary. Hi Wahyu — would you like me to export the annotations and do a screenshot of what it looks like on my laptop to see how accurate the annotations are?

I need it because often I want to review the book by looking only the annotations. Thanks a lot. Thanks for the pics. So the export will result in flattened pdf right? Could the apps extract the annotations only? Hey Wahyu, I just tested out the apps.

Unlike you, I find working with multiple colors and fonts very easy in iAnnotate: I just add tools with different colors and fonts to the toolbar. Similar with the high-liting and note tools. I have mentioned before I think in my earlier posts , that if I was at home and just annotating, reading notes, then yes, iAnnotate would be preferred as their highlighting tool is superior — but in my case, note taking is important to me, in lectures, tutorials and workshops.

As I am a perfectionist, I try to make my font size as close as possible to the notes — so the font size varies from 6pt, 7pt, 8. Regarding remembering the last settings, I just checked the app again — I think this may have been in the latest update?

Previously, when I was using the default tools ie without the customisations , such as the highlighter, I would change the colour to red, highlight what I wanted, then press done.

I would then select the highlight tool again, but would have to set the colour to red again as it now had reverted back to the original yellow colour same goes for the typewriter, underlining and pen tool. Regarding the colour inspector — I was simply making a comparison between the three apps.

In my opinion, there are other ways to allow the user to pick a colour without taking up a large portion of their screen a simple row of the colour spectrum instead of a large square works. No one really uses the Hex or the RGB either right? Give a person too many options and they will be there all day picking the right colour.

Do you see my point? There are things in iAnnotate that are not necessary or fiddly. I hope this clears up some of the confusion. I prefer things simple, clean and orderly and PDF Expert does that. If I was in a different scenario, at work or at home marking up documents then yes, I would probably prefer iAnnotate, or Goodreader. From other research, your analysis of the shortcomings of each app seems quite fair. From everything else, it seems like PDF Expert is the best all-around solution, and I can just hope they consider adding tabbed browsing in a future update.

Thanks for this great comparison. It seems like Preview does, but I hate the workflow and lack and features in Preview. My job entails a huge amount of time inside PDF files. For working across all of my Macs, I was quite happy using Skim and saving the exported Skim notes file that stayed with its PDF in my dropbox folder.

The problem with that is it only works in Skim. Now that I am trying to work more and more on the iPad, I will have to go back to Preview uggh. You can find it here. If so, can I insert an image from the camera roll? I essentially want to use this for ancestry research where I take an image file a census scan and annotate it, then sync it to a folder on my Mac.

Hi, To answer your questions: 1. You can use the stamp tool — this will allow you to add photos from the camera roll. You can then resize the image and draw all over it with pen if you like. Might I also suggest a different program that has all the features you are looking for? WebDav is supported. Essentially, it is like PDF Expert but cheaper and has extra features.

I went ahead and purchased PDF Expert before your feedback. Thought I may as well given I like their ReaddleDocs app and own just about everything else. Unlike PDFpen the large image doesnt fill the extent of the page — it just adds at a fixed size and you must manually drag the handles to the edges. Quite tedious if like me you intend to add many scanned documents from the Photo roll. I missed this too until they pointed it out to me. Though PDF Converter tends to rotate pages which are in landscape around into portrait so everything is on its side.

I can rotate it back around using PDF Expert, which is yet more steps, but actually might not be too bad because it means the image fits the page better. With PDFpen it keeps the inserted images right way up but wastes space from putting a landscape image on a portrait page. Neither a deal breaker though. What would be nice is if any of these apps could convert multiple images to PDF in one step, one per page or one per file.

This would save bouncing between two apps. Feels extremely clunky. Thanks for the really interesting and informative article on these apps. I found it on the iTunes store whilst browsing, nice little app that sorts me out for my PDF viewing, editing and printing and makes my job a little easier! Great comparison, Kazza. Thanks so much. Could you tell me how you do it?

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. Foxit PDF Reader. Slim PDF. Nitro Reader. These days, PDF documents are being used everywhere. And, so everybody uses them at work, in schools, and even for digital copies of the manuals for your peripherals and devices.

While simply opening a PDF as a read-only file is straightforward — you can just do it using your favorite web browser — editing, altering or converting one will require a dedicated PDF reader. These should see you through advanced tasks like signing or editing documents, merging PDFs or converting between document formats.

For more flexibility, take a look at our guide to the best free PDF editors , which make editing a PDF as straightforward as tweaking a Word document. It gives you total freedom to create PDFs from scratch and edit existing documents without fuss, on desktop or mobile.

What really sets this free PDF reader apart is that it can handle opening multiple large files at once. That means you can read through and annotate thick documents in this program without worrying that it will crash on you. Acrobat Reader DC includes just about all the annotation tools you could want, making this hands down the best free PDF reader.

It allows you to highlight text, add comments, and fill and sign forms. Tools for editing, signing, highlighting, and commenting are fairly easy to access. You can also merge or split PDFs by downloading free add-ons for the software.

Note that with the software’s latest update, Foxit seems to have removed its PDF virtual printer driver, meaning you can no longer use the software to create PDFs. The downside to this small size is that Slim PDF is pretty basic. There are no tools for signing, filling, commenting, or highlighting, let alone multiple reading modes. While there is a menu option to convert a PDF to a Word document, doing this requires another software download.

Touchscreen mode is especially nice for reading e-books, since you can flick the pages rather than scroll or click on a button. You can annotate documents with underlining and strikethroughs in addition to highlighting. Comments are also supported, and they appear like sticky notes that are easy to spot as you read through a document. Helpfully, the software also allows you to convert between PDF and other document formats.

The software has a ribbon-style menu that will be familiar to Microsoft Office users. The interface is a little more complex than some others but gives you easy access to plenty of helpful features. You can use this platform to merge or split individual PDF files. Michael Graw is a freelance journalist and photographer based in Bellingham, Washington.

PDF Expert is delightfully easy to use, offers the fastest PDF app reading experience, works with many syncing services, and has the most robust toolset available on the iPad. PDFs also happen to be one of the best and most universal ways to send a document to another person.

Almost any computing device can view them, and they will almost always display as intended — with formatting and layout intact — across all manner of platforms and devices. We spend an inordinate amount of time sorting through hundreds of apps to find the very best. Our team here at The Sweet Setup put together a short list of our must-have, most-used apps in These apps work on iPad, iPhone, and Mac. And they range across several different categories but are mostly focused on productivity.

They will help you get the most out of your devices and your day. Get the List ». For our testing, we included both paid and free apps that were popular or recommended. The apps we tested were:. There were many apps that could do almost every task, but often fell short in one or more tests — most notably in the merging and form-filling tests.

This is something the NSA should probably look into. Creation of those annotations is also a simple task. The small nature of the note bubble can make for rather tricky placement with a finger. On the plus side, the note text is rendered in Helvetica and not Marker Felt. PDF Expert also boasts solid signature support, but we wish that we could insert a signature without the tap to hold gesture, which is hard, if not impossible, to do while holding the device with one hand.

It is odd that clicking the signature icon in the toolbar is not how you insert a signature, but rather how you create signatures, making it a confusing icon to have persistent in the toolbar. It used to be that you could only stow one signature in PDF Expert. Now you can insert any signature you like, whenever you like. Doing so unlocks the following features:.

There is also a massive set of proofing markup icons for proofreading documents. However, unlike the stamping tools in other apps tested, PDFpen can use iCloud to sync over media from its Mac counterpart. Additionally, PDFpen comes with a library of proofing markup tools that are sure to be a boon to serious reviewers.

PDFpen is a solid, well-designed offering, and we have no doubt that with future updates it could knock PDF Expert out of the top spot. The editing features alone are killer, if you choose to unlock them. For almost any contract-based business, PDFs are a way of life. Curated List of Must-Have Apps We spend an inordinate amount of time sorting through hundreds of apps to find the very best.

A special, pro tip for each app to help you save time and become more of a power user. A hidden feature of each app that you may not have known about. PDF Expert is easy to use, works with many syncing services, offers the fastest document reading experience, and has the most robust toolset available.

Beautiful Widgets for iOS 14! In the modern app business, it’s not easy to stay relevant that long. We’re proud to say that after 12 years and counting, we’ve been delivering wonderful updates with extraordinary new features. And we’re going to keep doing that! GoodReader is a perfect combination of document-reading and file-managing capabilities.

It’s your one-stop shop for all your document needs on your iOS device. Use the app once, and you’ll be hooked. Soon you’ll be wondering how you ever managed to work without it. Reading experience is so superior, it’s hard to describe. To rephrase one of our customers’ review, “try it, and you’ll see. Annotating PDFs is another star feature of our app. Adding notes and drawings, highlighting text, and then sharing your annotated files or annotation summaries will be your main productivity and collaboration asset.

It can also serve as a central hub for all your files, even those that can’t be opened by GoodReader itself. It’s like bringing your personal computer experience to your mobile device — easily managing huge collections of files and folders will make you forget you don’t have your laptop around. Download, upload, and sync individual files or huge folder collections.

And it’s completely independent from the built-in Apple’s Data Protection, so even if a hacker steals and unlocks your device, your data will still be protected by another strong layer of security, our own.

And even two different parts of the same file! I have had this app on my iPad for several years now and would be lost without it! I use it primarily for knitting–as a collection place for my many patterns. I place lines, vertically, that are the same color as my stitch markers about every stitches and then create a horizontal line to move up or down in the direction that the pattern is to be read.

If needed you can make notes to yourself about where you left off either in the line or a message bubble on how you did something a little bit different. I recently created a lace shawl that I would have never been able to create without it. Another thing I like about GoodReader is that you can access your stored patterns even if you are away from internet access.

Being able to organize patterns by creating folders and mark patterns with different colored star–those patterns that you want to create for some little person soon or the Fair next summer.

There are so many pieces to this app, that I am sure I don’t use them all, but absolutely love what I have found. Even though one can only give 5 stars, I’d give 10 if I could. Its been part of my everyday reading and studying since my first iPad back in The new version 5 is outstanding specially since finally we are able to sync multiple iOS devices via iCloud. Well done!!! Yet there is a minor issue, that affects regular use of the app, specially in the annotation process.

Currently Im using two iPad pros not the last generation, the one before , with apple pencil first generation. It does not ruin the app, but it definitely make it less efficient. Hope to see an upgrade soon addressing this matter. Other than that, great work people, you have produced an outstanding APP!!! It used to be 5 star without doubt. This is rip off. Subscription based sales should be for somethings like magazines and so on.

Not apps like pdf readers. If you wanted to sell new features you could just introduce new version besides this one. Or make them one time in app purchase. These features were newly developed for GoodReader v. The suggestion that the any feature available in previous versions of GoodReader now requires a subscription purchase is not true.

Please review our comprehensive Update History on our website here: goodreader. We hope this clears up any confusion, but if you have additional questions or concerns about this subject or anything else, please e-mail us at support goodreader.
